The Full EHC Timeline

The EHC Timeline Explained

If both the EHC Needs Assessment and EHC Plan are agreed, it should take no more than 20 weeks from the point when an assessment is requested by the parent/school, until the final EHC Plan is issued. It is important to remember that there are some exceptions to the 20 week timeline, such as school holiday dates.

When the application for an EHC Needs Assessment is received by the Local Authority, the application will be acknowledged and will progress with the timeline. You may wish to make a note of the dates so that you can track the application.

Local Authorities must tell you whether they will carry out an EHC Needs Assessment or not within six weeks of receiving the request. Guidance on what to do if this does not happen can be found on the IPSEA Website.

Co-Production in the EHC Timeline

We want to work with you, as families, throughout your EHC Journey. We aim to do this, in part, through dedicated co-production meetings called 'Family First Calls' or 'Next Steps Meetings', depending on which stage of the journey you are on.

These meetings are opportunities for you to give us your say, so that we can work closely with you in order to deliver the best outcome for you, either during the Assessment process, or in Drafting and Issuing an EHCP.
