Finding somewhere to live

Finding housing
In Hounslow and London there is a shortage of housing making rents expensive.

Renting a room in a shared house is usually the most affordable option.

Usually this means you would rent a bedroom and share other facilities like bathroom, kitchen and living rooms too.

How to budget
As well as the cost of rent, you also need to consider other essential costs.

Does your rent include any bills? These can be charges like electricity/ gas bills, council tax and water rates.

You can work out your budget using tools like this one on the Princes Trust Website

Paying your deposit
Landlords take a deposit before you move in just in case you don’t pay your rent.

This is usually equal to a month’s rent. Sometimes it’s more.

Getting a reference
Most landlords and estate agents will ask for a reference from your previous landlord.

If this is your first time renting, you could ask for a reference from an employer or close friend.

Depending on your circumstances, the landlord may ask for a guarantor. This is someone who has to pay the rent if you can’t pay it yourself.
