LEAH (Learn English at Home)

Learn English at Home (LEAH) is a small independent charity working with isolated and vulnerable residents from ethnic minority backgrounds, who do not have English as their first language. Our aim is to improve their language skills, reduce isolation and enable them to integrate fully into their local community.

We help them by training and supporting volunteers who teach them in their homes or small group classes with crèche facilities in the local community.

Who is eligible for LEAH’s support?

Residents of Kingston upon Thames, Richmond and Hounslow with low level English language skills who need help to communicate their basic/everyday needs but cannot attend adult education classes regularly for the following reasons:

  • Their language skills are too low level
  • They have a young child/children at home
  • They have mobility or health problems
  • They are carers who cannot leave home because of their caring duties
  • They are socially isolated and lack confidence to go out alone

All referrals will be prioritised according to need. For more information, call or visit the website

Whilst we make every effort to find a suitable tutor as soon as possible, there is usually a waiting list. In certain circumstances, Learn English at Home may not be able to provide a tutor. Where appropriate we will refer people onto a further agency.
