First Step Playgroup
First Step playgroup is situated in the heart of the Heston Community and is a family style multi-cultural setting that welcomes all families. We are open from 8.45am to 3.15pm and offer a range of hours to suit parents and carers.
First Step follows the Early Years Foundation Stage and particularly concentrates on children's social development enabling them to make friends, be independent as well as sharing and taking turns. We also have a language professional to support children's language skills which will enable them to be confident readers and writers in the future.
The setting also has Forest School which allows children to explore and investigate the natural world around them as we use the local park and this allows children to gain skills to make them happy and confident learners. As we are based in the centre of Heston we take the children to the local shops and practice our road safety as well as buying fruit, milk and stamps in the local shops.
We have an Early Years Professional to support our practice and to ensure that the children are achieving their potential through enjoyable experiences and supportive adults. We have many years of experience working with children and their families and especially children who have autism, social communication difficulties, behavioural difficulties and speech and language difficulties. We aim to support all families.
How we support SEND
- Named SENCO
- Our SENCO is Sandeep Kaur
The staff at First Step have a huge amount of experience of working with children with special needs on a daily basis, they offer activities to support children in their groups such as posting activities, lotto games, listening and attention and sensory activities.
In addition we offer small groups to support language development such as communication and helping children to manage their emotions through a programme called (PALS) playing and learning to socialise.
The playgroup uses visual pictures to support children with routines and we use Makaton signing to support all children's language development. Our support workers are able to offer special time activities to encourage eye contact and bucket time to support listening and attention and structured play activities to support play skills.
The setting is continuously accessing training to support all the children in the setting as we have a real commitment to being inclusive.
We have staff who are trained in
- Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS)
- All staff use Makaton to support children's language development.
- Listening and attention and Structured play
The playgroup is in a large hall all on one level enabling access to outdoor play as well as the local park and shops.
Their is a disabled toilet at the back of the hall, however there is no separate changing room available, children are changed at the back of the hall behind screens.
