Travel Assistance Options

Post 16 provision will be considered against the following criteria.

  • Consideration of EHCP that the young person has
  • The young person is 16-25 and is attending further education at a school, college or training provider.
  • The course is deemed suitable and will provide an educational benefit to the young person / adult and has been agreed by the council.
  • The journey is impracticable or dangerous to take to an educational establishment of less than 3 miles. Applications assessed on individual merits.

Bursaries:
Young people aged 16-19 may be eligible for a bursary fund which is designed to help 16, 17 and 18-year-old young people who struggle with the costs of full-time education or training. To be eligible for the discretionary bursary young people must:
  • Be aged 16-18 at 31 August 2023 or
  • Be aged 19 or over at 31 August 2023 and have an Education Health Care Plan (EHCP)
  • Be aged 19 or over at 31 August 2023 and continuing a study programme they began aged 16 to 18 (19+ “continuers”)
  • Be studying a programme that is subject to inspection by a public body which assures quality (such as Ofsted) the provision must also be funded by either a Government funding agency or the local authority.

Bursaries are administered by the individual providers. You should apply directly to student services at your placement. Most schemes are administered on a first come first served basis. You should apply as soon as you have secured a place.

The Travel Training Service:
The Travel Training Service provides independent travel training and travel support to adults with a learning or physical disability, autism, mental health difficulty, sensory impairment or long-term health condition. The service aims to make you more travel confident and covers public transport (buses, trains and tubes) and walking routes.



Neurodiversity Passport: (formerly Autism Passport/Card)
Any person who requires a passport/card should email autism@met.police.uk to request a copy which is posted out to the applicant. We do not hold any personal data. Our scheme involves a small credit sized card which the person has to hand and can be immediately retrieved. This alerts officers that the person may have communication issues. The person carries the small A5 sized passport in a bag/rucksack which goes into more detail about how the officer needs to communicate with the person, including how to help the person and any relevant information.
