Course outline

The Social Communication Difficulties Steps to Toileting Information Pack has been designed and produced by the Early Years SEN Team to provide practitioners in the Early Years with best practice guidance on supporting the toileting development of children with Social Communication Difficulties.

Course objectives:

The session will aim to:

  • Introduce the Social Communication Difficulties Steps to Toileting Pack and provide an overview of the contents
  • Share the particular considerations to be taken into account when planning and implementing toileting support for children with Social Communication Difficulties that may impact toileting development
  • Share best practice in planning and preparing for toileting support
  • Provide guidance on how to use screening tools to support identification of starting points to enable children with SCD to develop their toileting skills
  • Share an overview of the 4 steps to toileting approach outlining the key aims of each step including relevant targets to consider
  • Provide opportunity to view resources and consider practical suggestions of activities, strategies and interventions linked to the 4 steps to toileting approach
Course outcomes:

Practitioners will have increased:

  • Knowledge of the contents of the Social Communication Difficulties Steps to Toileting Information Pack
  • Understanding of the particular factors that may impact toileting development for children with Social Communication Difficulties
  • Understanding of factors to take into account when planning and implementing a small step approach to toileting for children with Social Communication Difficulties
  • Knowledge of and confidence in using screening tools to support identification of starting points
  • Knowledge of the key aims of each of the 4 Steps to Toileting
  • Ability to identify appropriate targets and outcomes to support toileting development
  • Ability to plan, prepare and deliver activities, strategies and interventions linked to the Steps to Toileting
  • Knowledge of a range of resources to support the toileting development of children with SCD
