Course outline:

The purpose of this session is to develop practitioners’ knowledge and understanding of the main characteristics of social communication difficulties in order to support early identification of need and to be able to identify appropriate next steps of support.
Course objectives:
  • To share the main characteristics of social communication difficulties in order to support early identification of needs
  • To consider the relationship between social communication difficulties (SCD) and autistic spectrum disorder (ASD)
  • To share and explain how to use assessment tools to support the early identification of social communication difficulties
  • To consider ways of identifying appropriate next steps for children with social communication difficulties
  • To share information on relevant health agencies in Hounslow involved in the assessment of children with social communication difficulties
Course outcomes:
Practitioners will have increased ~
  • Knowledge of what is meant by ‘social communication difficulties’ and the relationship with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD)
  • Knowledge of the main characteristics of social communication difficulties and how these may present through their behaviours and/or communication
  • Confidence in using early identification tools, outside agency advice and the EYFS to support identification of next steps and track progress
