Registered childcare

Registered childcare has been approved by Ofsted. Ofsted regulates:
  • the quality of childcare provision
  • the registration, investigation, inspections and enforcement of early learning and childcare provision
See Guides for parents for more information

Childminders

Childminders provide care for children in the childminder’s own home. This is more flexible than other forms of childcare and within a home environment. Childminders offer smaller group that can benefit some children

Childminder ratios

No more that 6 children under the age of 8. Of these 6 children:
  • no more than 3 may be young children (A young child is up until the September following their fifth birthday)
  • only one child under the age of one. The exceptions to this are:
    • that they are caring for sibling babies,
    • caring for their own baby or to maintain continuity of care.
If a childminder employs an assistant or works with another childminder
They may care for the same number of children. With the parents’ permission, children can be in the sole care of assistants for 2 hours at most in a single day.

Preschool playgroups

Preschools or Playgroups provide part-time childcare for children. Offering sessions that are:
  • from 3 hours to 5 hours long,
  • either mornings or afternoons,
  • for children aged between 2 and 4 years old.
  • they are usually only open during school term-time.
Ratios for children aged two:
  • there must be at least one member of staff for every four children
  • at least one member of staff must hold a full and relevant level 3 qualification
  • at least half of all other staff must hold a full and relevant level 2 qualification
Rations for children aged three and over:
  • there must be at least one member of staff for every eight children
  • at least one member of staff must hold a full and relevant level 3 qualification
  • at least half of all other staff must hold a full and relevant level 2 qualification

Day Nurseries

Day nurseries open for longer hours such as 7am to 7pm often 50 or 51 weeks of the year. They can care for babies from 3 months old up to 5 years.

Ratios for children aged under two:
  • there must be at least one member of staff for every three children
  • at least one member of staff experienced in working with children under 2. They must have a full and relevant level 3 qualification,
  • at least half of all other staff must hold a full and relevant level 2 qualification
  • at least half of all staff must have received training that addresses the care of babies
  • if there is an under two year olds’ room. Staff in charge of that room must have suitable experience of working with under twos.
Ratios for children aged two and over:
  • there must be at least one member of staff for every four children
  • at least one member of staff must hold a full and relevant level 3 qualification
  • at least half of all other staff must hold a full and relevant level 2 qualification
Ratios for children aged 3 and over
  • there must be at least one member of staff for every eight children
  • at least one member of staff must hold a full and relevant level 3 qualification
  • at least half of all other staff must hold a full and relevant level 2 qualification

Out of School care

Before and after school care offers childcare beyond the normal school day. Not all schools offer this facility in which case a childminder may be able to assist. You have the right to ask the school to consider offering before and afterschool care.

Ratios

Where the before/after school care is for children who attend during the school day, there must be enough staff as for a class of 30 children.

It is for providers to determine how many staff. They must ensure and meet the safety and welfare of children. Bearing in mind the type(s) of activity and the age and needs of the children. It is for providers to determine what qualifications, if any, the manager and/or staff should have

Holiday playschemes is another form of out of school care and can be in

  • schools
  • youth clubs
  • community halls
  • play centres

They provide activities for your child during the school holidays. They are usually open between 8am to 6pm. Ratios are the same as before and afterschool care.

Childminder Agencies (CMA)

Childminder agencies register childminders and help them with:

  • training
  • business support
  • advice
  • and finding parents.

Ofsted will inspect the Agency. The Agency will assess the childminders performance. The agency has a duty to monitor the standard of care provided by the childminders it registers.

The Tiney Childminder Agency have childminders registered with them, that live in the London Borough of Hounslow. You will need to contact the agency to discuss anyone registered with them.
