Introduction to the Designated Safeguarding Lead

Target audience

Have you recently been appointed designated safeguarding lead (DSL) or are you new to the Designated Safeguarding Lead role within your setting?

This course is for newly appointed designated safeguarding leads working with children in early years settings.

Course outline

This course is particularly aimed at staff who:

• Hold specific responsibilities for safeguarding children.

• Are expected to provide support to staff in settings.

• Are responsible for managing concerns about staff conduct.

• The course will be spread across 1 x 2 hour session online followed by a whole day face to face session. You will need to attend both sessions.

Aims

The overall aim of the course is to introduce you to the role, to explore some of the complexities in managing the lead role and how to communicate effectively with different agencies. We will discuss factors to consider when there is a child welfare concern or allegation as well as identify best practice for confidentiality, sharing of information and recording processes.

On this course you will:

• Develop an understanding of your role and responsibilities as a designated safeguarding lead.

• Build your confidence in supporting and overseeing safeguarding arrangements and practices within your setting.

• Understand how to escalate concerns, make referrals and work in the multi-agency protection process.

• Understand your role in providing early help and statutory intervention as well as supporting your staff team’s knowledge and practice.

• Consider how values play a part in our understanding of safeguarding issues

• Explore different forms of child abuse and how it may impact on children.

Our Local Safeguarding Partners (HSCP) suggest that designated leads complete training of a child protection element every year. This is not the same designated training however it is elements of child protection such as, female genital mutilation, domestic violence etc.
