Wraparound Care

What is wraparound childcare?

Wraparound childcare is childcare provided before and after the school day for primary school-aged children. It commonly includes breakfast clubs and after-school clubs.

The provision should be available every school day during term time, outside normal school hours—for example, from 8am until the start of the school day and from the end of the school day until 6pm.

Wraparound childcare may be delivered on the school site or nearby by the school, a private childcare provider or a childminder.

How much will wraparound care cost me?

There are no eligibility criteria for accessing a wraparound childcare place. However, wraparound childcare is a chargeable service, and fees will vary because providers set their own prices.

Parents will usually pay the childcare provider directly or through their child’s school payment system.
Depending on your circumstances, you may be able to receive help with childcare costs through:
  • Tax-Free Childcare;
  • Universal Credit childcare costs; or
  • Childcare Vouchers, if you are already registered with an existing scheme, as these schemes are closed to new applicants.
The childcare provider must meet the relevant requirements for the chosen government support scheme.

If wraparound childcare is not available

Parents and carers have the right to ask the school their child attends, or is due to attend, to consider providing wraparound or holiday childcare if suitable provision is not currently available.
