If you have wondered how to broach the subject of SEND and/or share concerns with parents about children’s progress this might be the session for you. We will consider why it is important to approach parents with concerns at the earliest point as well as considering how and when you should approach parents to share concerns. There will exploration of some common concerns that you might have when thinking about or having discussions with parents. There will be opportunity to explore practical ways to approach these concerns so that you can aim for more effective, collaborative, and sensitive communications with parents.

Course objectives:

This session will aim to cover:

  • Factors to consider when talking with parents of children with SEND and why it is important to develop effective communication
  • Practical advice on how to develop effective listening skills when talking with parents
  • Tips and useful ways of speaking with parents to promote effective communication
  • How and when to share concerns about children’s progress with parents
  • How to deal with and respond to parent queries / concerns
  • Sources of support available to parents
Course Outcomes:

Childminders will have increased knowledge and understanding of:

  • The importance of having discussions at the earliest point of identification of need
  • When to have discussions to support early identification
  • Important and specific factors to be aware of when communicating with parents of children with SEND
  • Effective listening skills when talking with parents
  • Ways of speaking with parents to promote effective communication
  • Ways to share concerns about children’s progress with parents
  • Tips to deal with and respond to parent queries / concerns
  • Where to look for information and sources of support available to parents
